About these Nutrition Resources

Let's face it. When you are managing and balancing a busy life of work, family, fun, and other responsibilities, who has time to think about what you are going to eat three to six times a day? However, the fact is a good diet filled with nutrient-rich foods is beneficial, not just for your health, but also for your well-being. Eating a wide variety of healthy foods within moderation helps increase your energy and stamina, and also helps decrease your health risk for chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. The following resources and links can help you get started on the road to good eating!

    This behavioral change program is designed to promote good health and well-being through new lifestyle habits. Learn how to incorporate a healthful diet and exercise into your life.   • MyPyramid.gov
    The new food pyramid released by the USDA replaces the one old one. It follows the new dietary guidelines that were released earlier this year. People can tailor their caloric needs to their physical activity and find tips about how to incorporate nutritious foods into their meals.
  • U.S. Department of Health & Human Services
    The newest edition of Nutrition and Your Health: Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a joint publication of the Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture, was released on January 2005 and is now available online.
  • Foundations of Wellness
    A collection of articles on nutrition and a healthy lifestyle from the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter.
  • 5 A Day - For Better Health
    This website provides a wide variety of recipes and tips on how to incorporate an average of 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables into your diet each day.
  • American Dietetic Association
    Information about healthy lifestyles, nutrition fact sheets, and daily nutrition tips and eating guides. This website also provides a list of available nutrition resources and books.
  • Mayo Clinic Food and Nutrition Center
    Diet plays a significant role in diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. The Food & Nutrition Center features the latest in nutrition research and comprehensive articles on eating well.

    The UC Berkeley Guide for Healthy Meetings and Events provides recommendations and implementation tips to ensure faculty, staff and students have access to healthy food and beverage choices at all campus-supported events serving refreshments.   • Diabetic Lifestyle Online Magazine
    An online monthly magazine for people who want to better understand diabetes and learn how to live well while caring for this chronic disease. This site, sponsored by Diabetes Digest , provides up-to-date health information, recipe ideas, and a supply center featuring items and services to help you take better control of your health.
  • Joslin Diabetes Center

    A non-profit resource center dedicated to preventing osteoporosis through research and education of the public and medical community to increase awareness of risk, detection, prevention and treatment. Education programs include lectures, conferences, and newsletters, available on this website. The Foundation is also provides "state of the art" bone density testing.
  • National Institutes of Health Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases National Resource Center
    The NIH ORBD~NRC mission is to provide patients, health professionals, and the public with an important link to resources and information on metabolic bone diseases, including osteoporosis, Paget's disease of the bone, osteogenesis imperfecta, and hyperparathyroidism.
  • National Osteoporosis Foundation
    The National Osteoporosis Foundation is the leading nonprofit, voluntary health organization dedicated to promoting lifelong bone health in order to reduce the widespread prevalence of osteoporosis and associated fractures, while working to find a cure for the disease through programs of research, education and advocacy.

  • Aim for a Healthy Weight
    These guidelines from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute present a new approach for the assessment of overweight and obesity and a set of steps for safe and effective weight loss.
  • American Heart Association's Choose to Move!
    This is a free 12-week physical activity program geared towards women. The program shows women ways to build regular exercise into their daily lives and choosing a healthier, active lifestyle. The site also contains tools to help you improve your eating habits by making better nutritional food choices.
  • American Heart Association's Start!
    A national campaign that calls on all Americans and their employers to create a culture of physical activity and health to live longer, heart-healthy lives through walking. On this site, you can register to use a free tracking tool, and log in your daily activity and nutrition. You’ll also receive weekly and monthly newsletters filled with tips and motivation to keep moving.
  • Calorie Control Council
    Calculate your calories, receive tips for eating habit changes, read exercise information, and find healthy recipes all on this site. Also included are answers to frequently asked questions and links to other relevant sources.
  • Cyberdiet
    A comprehensive website for the health conscious. Receive information regarding vitamins and minerals, dining out, and exercise tips. Also chart your own eating habits with a daily food planner, receive support and motivation, and do your own self-assessment of your fitness and eating habits.
  • Aerobics & Fitness Association of America (AFAA)
    Create your own personal exercise program on this site and find a trainer near you for support and motivation. Also included on this site are excerpts from the American Fitness Magazine.
  • ExRx (Exercise Prescription)
    An online resource for the exercise professional or fitness enthusiast, with over 1500 pages of information about exercise, weight management, and diet and nutrition. Also contains interactive pages that demonstrate proper form for various weight training and stretching exercises. Users will also find tools to calculate body fat percentage, body mass index, and creating and tracking your own exercise program.

    Located on Bancroft Way, the RSF features an Olympic-size pool, basketball courts, racquetball courts, squash courts, handball courts, badminton, volleyball courts, a weight room, fitness machines, table tennis, and locker rooms with towel service. CalFIT also offer a wide variety of classes in fitness, sports, dance, aerobics, and martial arts.
