  • About CPS Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) provides brief counseling to students with personal, academic and career concerns. Professional counselors can meet with students to talk about a number of concerns such as: adjusting to school, deciding on a career or major, dealing with family or relationship issues, coping with personal crises. All undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for CPS services, regardless of their insurance coverage
How to see a counselor To see a counselor for the first time, students should call 642-9494. Students will be scheduled to speak by telephone with a triage counselor, who will assist with appropriate next steps. This might include a full in-person appointment (generally available within 1 - 2 weeks), emergency counseling (available each day 10 AM - 5:30 PM for urgent concerns), group counseling or a referral to other resources. See counseling appointments for more information.
    Brief Counseling

For many concerns, meeting with a counselor at CPS may be the best option. CPS offers short-term counseling (up to 10 sessions) for individuals and groups. Groups and workshops are available on a variety of topics.. If the counseling offered at CPS is not right for a student, we will help the student find referrals in the community where sliding scale and low fee options are available.

After hours For emergencies at night or on weekends, students can call After Hours Assistance at 643-7197 for referral information. In case of a life-threatening emergency, students should go to the nearest hospital emergency department or call 911 (on-campus or off-campus) if an ambulance is needed. The closest hospital emergency room to campus is Alta Bates Hospital, 2450 Ashby Ave, just east of Telegraph Ave. Also see Emergency and Crisis.
If you are concerned about another student

Counselors are available to consult with students, faculty, and staff regarding various psychological issues that may affect Berkeley students. If you are concerned about a student, call CPS at 642-9494 for a telephone consultation. Between 8AM - 6PM counselors are available to take your call. Please let us know the urgency of your concern.

CPS also offers training and educational workshops to the campus community to help faculty and staff better assist students. For some helpful tips, see how to help students in emotional distress

Online Mental Health Screenings University Health Services offers online screenings for depression, anxiety, eating disorders, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress. The screenings may help you determine whether seeking professional consultation would be of benefit to you. These free screenings are available to all UC Berkeley students, staff and faculty members and are taken anonymously.
Confidentiality See Understanding Counseling and Confidentiality.
Fees Access to CPS services is free to all registered students. Students do not need to have purchased the Student Health Insurance Plan to see a counselor. See Counseling Fees
    Groups and Self Help

See the Calendar of Groups and Workshops. Also see Twelve-Step Programs On or Near Campus.
Upon request, the Counseling staff also provides workshops for student groups, academic departments and administrative units on a variety of psychological issues, as well as how to refer students for counseling. Call 642-9494 to make a request.

    Staff

CPS staff is a multicultural group of professional counselors, including psychologists, social workers, and advanced-level trainees. We try to accommodate students' preferences regarding counselor gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. See Counseling Staff to learn more about the members of the staff

Training programs CPS offers APA accredited internships, post-doctoral fellowships, post-MSW fellowships, and career counseling internships.
Depression Awareness and Suicide Prevention Online Training Click here for training. You will learn about student mental health trends and how to recognize and respond when a student is in distress, needs help, or may be thinking about suicide.
